More than half their payroll is dead money - they're paying more to players who don't play for them than they are to players that do.
Like I said, they're "all in" on rebuilding.

Through the MLB.TV Roku app, I can now watch games and hear only the ballpark sounds. No TV announcers.

I actually expect the Rockies to be a bit more competitive this year. If we would not have lost one of our best starting pitchers (Bettis) I would actually say they are a playoff team.
Even without Bettis (and Gray) they look pretty damn good 25% of the way through. Still remains to be see if they can keep it up, and I won't be convinced until late July at the earliest, but their young pitching is keeping them in games and the bullpen is lights out. And that's with Cargo and Story not really hitting yet. Still room to get substantially better and they are already 10 games over .500.

I'm hopeful, yet guarded....

Hunter Strickland is an idiot, and it takes four guys to clear him off the field long after Harper is in the dugout.

In other news, I started to learn the basics about types of pitches.

I can't I.D. most of them correctly/reliably from the usual TV camera angle, but I suppose it takes some larnin'.

Yep, I was at that game. Ridiculous fight and so dumb Strickland was apparently holding on to a grudge from the 2014 NLDS.

So is Harper, if he was trying to actually hit him with the helmet. Brawls are stupid in general, but tossing a helmet isn't Kosher. Not sure if Harper threw incredibly badly or if he thought better of it mid-throw.

I definitely wouldn't want to see Harper rushing me in general though. Boy's a hoss.

Hey, the Rockies are still good! Watched a bit of the StL game on Sunday and was surprised to find that out. I pay almost no attention to baseball.

I'm waiting for one of these guys that are hit intentionally to grab the ball that hit them, rush the mound and then throw the ball as hard as they can at the pitcher. This stuff has to stop. It isn't funny and a guy's career can end. I don't care if the batter is an asshole or screwed the pitcher's little sister.

Interesting read. Certainly a debate that I'd never seen much thought given to but made for a good discussion. I was surprised by how average Konerko's and Gant's careers were as well.

Also, I read your "Top Nine Predictions for the 2017 MLB Season"- looks like predictions 1 and 2 are pretty spot on. Bryce Harper's season projections line up pretty well with what you put so far- maybe even a little better at this point. Also, Syndergaard went down just like predicted. Obviously most of the predictions will play out over the season- Price isn't looking so hot, Nats look strong, Rangers are currently .500. Sale has been awesome, Seager's been solid but right now Harper looks like the more likely NL MVP, and Trout was on track before the thumb injury.

Yeah, I really need Price and Seager to pick it up for those to come true. Depending on how quickly Trout comes back, that one might work, but I figure the missed time will allow writers to give it to someone else (maybe Judge in a RoY/MVP doubleheader?)

Aaron Judge has been a monster. I just checked, and right now he's hitting .341 with 22 HR, 57 runs, 49 RBI and an OPS of 1.162. He's on pace for nearly 60 homers, 100+ runs and RBI, well over .300 BA and an OPS over 1.1 (including a .700+ slugging pct.). Assuming his defense is solid I wouldn't be surprised (or have a problem) if he was both RoY and MVP.

Hitting like that, he could be the worst fielder in the league and still might be most valuable. As it is, he seems an average fielder, at least (small sample size though).

His big issue will be adjusting as pitchers develop a scouting report on him. He's a fucking giant with a long swing - MLB pitchers will start finding the holes.

Damn, the NL west looks tough this year. It's the middle of june and 3 teams have over 40 wins. That's 3 teams on pace forr right about 100 wins this year.

nuts.

As a Dodgers fan, the NL West sucks right now

Oh, hey, we won!

Oh, so did Colorado. And Arizona. WTF!? Then one or two start losing a bit then win-streak right back up again. Rinse, repeat.

The Dodgers are the best team in the NL West, but it's not by a big margin. Both the Rockies and D-Backs have been lucky in 1-run games (esp. the Rockies), but it's actually not been as big an effect as I'd expect. All three teams are within two of their expected loss total - and the end of the season a four game swing like that would be huge, but for right now it just means they're all roughly as good as they seem.

You'll still never get me to bet against Kershaw though.

Astros were the best team in baseball.....then we lost McCullers and Keuchel to the DL at the same time. Hopefully they will be back to form soon.

The Dodgers are the most loaded team. Especially on pitching.

the Rockies young starters and a damn near perfect closer have made all the difference this year. And now they are playing with confidence.

I expect the Dodgers to win the division by a few games and the Rockies to take the wildcard if I was gonna guess today.

We still have Gray coming back as a starter from the DL too.....
