The Wiz thinks that the gigantic threads are getting too gigantic.

I'm likely to take the few threads that are over 10k posts, copy the most recent 100 posts and then archive the rest.

But seriously: if it's not too much of a PITA on the mega-threads, maybe keep the first page, and then keep the last 100 posts.

And don't ask bassaussie to do this.

Yeah. I may be wrong, but my thought is that we've got a few threads with > 20k posts. There is a plugin installed that will allow you to view all posts in a thread - you guys have seen the "all" link lotsa times and it's handy for two or three page threads.

If one was to accidentally click the "all" link on a 42,000 post thread it'd probably bring the server to its knees in a big hurry.

The thing that I *can't* explain is why it's happening now and didn't happen two weeks ago, which is why I suggested dropping and rebuilding the forum index.

KK, you could try disabling the plugin - I really don't remember whether it's a plugin or a template hack but it should be easy to find. Large threads shouldn't be that much of an issue as long as we're not opening the whole thing at once

And - thanks. Your work is greatly appreciated.

Whether or not that's the problem, I'm an advocate for eliminating the "all" button. I have never hit that button without immediately experiencing regret.

What DB are you using? If it's MySQL you might want to think about mariaDB. It's a drop in replacement. (Basically Oracle started to act like Oracle with MySQL and some very knowledgeable folks forked it.)

I've also been dorking around with MyBB and discourse. They're both open source and have methods for reading in vbulletin DBs. MyBB is the easiest since it has sane install and requirement practices. Discourse I'm still getting to work, since the devs go about things in a completely stupid method. If you want to sanitize a DB copy of ebassist and send it to me I can try dorking around with it. The only downside is that it's on a site I use personally (for IRL stuff) so i can't share the test forums. Although I can create how-tos and instructions.

Sanitizing a vB3 database would require you to drop tables; although user passwords are encrypted private messages are not. Also, it's probably much bigger than that now but the last mysql dump I did was a bit over 100MB.

MyBB looks good; perhaps KK can stand one up alongside vB for testing and import a copy of the database? I wouldn't do it with the production db as there's most likely no way back from that other than restoring a backup

I really don't think much is broken here; some database maintenance may resolve the issue. As mentioned things only started getting weird about ten days ago. I would compact the database, drop and rebuild the forum index, get rid of the "all" link and call it a day.

I do think that migrating from vB is probably a good long term plan because no security updates, though.

Other forums limit replies to 1000 before locking the thread and creating a new one.

Maybe limit mega threads to 5k?

I used to do this. What's bugging me is what happened in the last ten days or so because we've had 20k+ post threads for quite some time. I think all it is is a little database corruption, and restoring a corrupted backup probably won't resolve the issue

Yeah, drop the private msg table and I think it would be enough. I was worried the db would be GBs and not MBs. haha It was just an offer though.

And just create a new DB for MyBB and import the old DB into it. MyBB uses php on apache so there's no reason it can be beside vB.

Discourse is a ruby app which is installed via docker. Which if you want to run apache and discourse you have to run a reverse proxy through apache. Supposedly there's a one button upgrade for it, so upgrading it would be easier but set up can be annoying. Especially when docked isn't working.... Basically, rather than do I g things the right why in coding, the discourse people make it where it only works with X version of software and then because of that they put it in a docked container to make it "easier" to install. How it's written and packaged is trap but it looks nice and has functionality I want (for my own site etc). /rant

My beef is that vB has no security updates. It makes it a ticking time bomb with no why to defuse it. It will never have updates. While the current problem might be fixable, as time goes on more and more if these types of problems are going to happen. It's better to gracefully change/fix things today, than wait until they fall apart while you panic to fix them. Doesn't help that vB started charging up the ass for stuff either.
