by how much does on blemish affect resale value?

I'd posted this picture in another thread, but it really got me thinking about resale value.
Here's a high-end bass for sale which looks to be in good condition except for that one horrific scratch on the front. No idea how that happened....I thought it was a camera flash glare until I realized it was in every pic.

This bass in on ebay with a BIN of less than half what I'd expect to pay for used bass in great condition. Does one scratch--albeit a bad one-- really make it loose half or more of it's value? It's hard to judge, though, since there's almost no info in the auction link, and these aren't exactly very common.
I'm quite surprised, because I would have thought that a natural finish bass would be pretty easy to fix scratches on, and fixing it first before selling would seem like a no-brainer--especially since he just had it refretted.

Hopefully it affects the value quite a bit...that way guys like me that don't care about such things can get 'em cheap.

it's cheap because no one wants a BC Rich Bernardo.

It's ugly as a carvin

Well, I guess there is that, too.
I like both Carvin and Bernado shapes.

a seagull isn't pointy, but it is unusually shaped.

i got it as a six string and i really never took to a low B.

i should have gotten it in four string, but i was going for outrageous.

it's hanging on the wall behind me:

A tiny, by my standards indistinguishable scratch on the binding of my acoustic dropped the value more than 50% new. Granted, such things are more important on new basses.

I remember that bass, and remember when you sold it. I was really surprised when you did, although I can understand your reasoning. You got a good price when you sold it, if I recall.

That's right, I remember that now.

You know, looking at that photo, it brings back how amazing that collection was. Rudy Sarzo bass, Ibby Destroyer and Artist, the Guild. Not the most classic collection, but a really interesting one that covered so many different lines of instrument.

That scar above the pickups just looks like finish-wear, like the owner had a really long thumbnail.

There is a Les Paul Studio at my local Guitar Center that was dropped... it has a nasty chunk missing from the finish near the output jack. It's a Studio, but it has trap inlays and gold hardware.

They knocked $350 off of a $1200 guitar, so that's a bit more than 25%.
