The ebassist budget rig

I always thought that one of the best things to come out of HCBF was the HCBF budget rig. I know a lot of people went with the rig that was suggested, and I also seem to recall a lot of satisfaction with it.

So ..... seeing as though we're a few years on now, and we're also on a different forum with (possibly) different tastes, I was wondering if it might be possible for us to come up with an equally good suggestion.

Since I'm not really up on what's available at present, I'll simply set the requirement for the rig. It should be reasonably portable (weight that can be handled by one person, and size that can suit the average person's vehicle availablility), and loud/powerful enough to handle a gig from a room of around 200 people. And, finally, it's got to come in under $1000 (US).

I'd say and Avatar 212 or 410 Neo ($299 and $349 respectively) and a used Genz Benz GBE 600 from the 'bay would be a righteous "budget" rig that would come in under $1000.

Actually, this is basically my rig except I use an Ampeg SVT 410 for the cab.

The Avatar speaker boxes do seem to give a lot of value for money. They were part of the HCBF rig, weren't they?

Yep. I had a 210 (which went to LT actually), it was a great cab. Certainly a lot more cab for the $$ than you'll find elsewhere.

At first, a GK 400RB-III, then an Ampeg V4, and finally the Genz. At that point I debated getting another cab to pair with it (now that I had found a head that did what I wanted) but as fate and ebassist would have it, one of our fellow forumites was selling the Ampeg and LT was looking for a 210, so I went that route.

Peavey Mark VIII or GK 400 or 800RB
Avatar 2x12 or Peavey 1x15

If we're talking true "budget" rig, any head/cab combo of the above could be had for under $500. Hell, for $1000, you can be rockin' an 800RB and an Ampeg fridge off the used market.

I would still go for the Avatar cabs. Best bang for the buck out there IMO.

for a pre/power amp setup I still think the RBI is great with a good power amp. Either the Yamaha or maybe a QSC.

For a Head, I would go with a Yorkville or a Genz Benz.

A smokin' budget rig would be the GK700rbII ($500 shipped at rmcaudio.com) and an Avatar 2x12 Neo ($350 shipped). Spend the other $150 on strippers.
Or you could go with the 1001rbII for $600 shipped, you're still under $1000 and you have all brand new gear...

Ashdown MAG 300H 300W Bass Amp Head- $299.99 Free Shipping from MF.
AVATAR B212 Neo cab- $299.00 + $42.00 shipping from AvatarSpeakers.Com
$642 would get you one Hell of a starter rig these days.

They're listed when you look at a particular model.
Almost all of them charge $42 for shipping.
Of course, that's lower 48, I believe.
You might have to e-mail him about international shipments.

I'm not interested for me, just trying to get an idea of what sort of deal they offer. Sounds pretty good, though.

How about the ebassist budget set-up?

Take LT's Ashdown and Avatar rig and combine it with nice bass under $350 and you've got a complete bass set-up.

How about the Spector Performer?

The Performer isn't bad, but I got my Legend for $450 and it's head and shoulders above the Performer.

Used Trace head -> Ampeg 4x10"

I like takeout's idea better though. GK rox0rz!

I think if you ask 12 people, you'll get 12 different answers. My GBE 500H along with my Behringer 4x10 seems to be working fine for about $600.00 total.

Yeah, I think you're right Al. Although I think the power amp may've been optional between the Yamaha and a QSC (maybe ).

Back when this was more common on HC, the CP2000 was the only one that got tossed around. After they discontinued it though, the QSCs became a bit more prominent on the board.

My GBE400 = $350 new
GB115 = 175 + shipping = 200 used

$550 for my rig...

One of the best tones I've ever heard involved a Jazz bass, an 800RB, and an Ampeg fridge. And I'm a dyed-in-the-wool tube guy.

Can we get an update on a new rig?

The 4x10 has fallen out of favour with many for the 2x12.

I'm rocking a 9000lb Genz rig, but light is now the name of the game as well. 5lb amp, 30lb cab.

No more racks.
