One of my bassets is starting to go blind.

Her night vision is already pretty well shot.

Yeah, I have to take her out in the backyard on a leash at night now because she walks into stuff.

Don't get me wrong, it's pretty damn funny when she head butts the barbeque,

But it's still sad.

One of ours lost his sight, though he did live to 17. If he didn't know you were there and touched him it would scare the hell out of him. One day he walked into a branch that put his eye out, and my parents had to take him in to be put down. Still don't like thinking about that. He was a great dog and a tough little sob.

That's why I take her on a leash. She walked into one of the pine trees in the back yard and lacerated her eye.

Not nearly as amusing.

We've been dog-sitting for friends for the last week. Harley is hanging out with Hank and Trap, two and fourteen year old Beagle/Lab mixes. They're best buds.

Life is good.

Dogs are more capable of understanding situations from a human's point of view than has previously been recognised, according to researchers.

They found dogs were four times more likely to steal food they had been forbidden, when lights were turned off so humans in the room could not see.

This suggested the dogs were able to alter their behaviour when they knew their owners' perspective had changed.

Well duh. Any dog owner could tell you the dog stops doing what it's supposed to as soon as you leave the room.

Dog 'saved life' of missing Polish girl

Quote:
Firefighters in Poland say a small dog likely saved the life of a three-year-old girl who went missing from her home overnight in freezing temperatures.

The child, Julia, vanished on Friday and was found lying in marshes several kilometres from her house on Saturday morning, with the dog by her side.

She is now in hospital in western Poland, suffering from frostbite after temperatures fell to -5C (23F).

Firefighter Grzegorz Szymanski said the dog kept the child warm enough to live.

"For the whole night the animal was with the girl, it never left her. Remember, it was 5 degrees below zero and the child was wet," he said, adding that the animal was the most important factor in the girl's survival.

A cat would have eaten her eyeballs and hollowed out her chest for a bed.
