Finished the primary demoing for another record: Dark, Dark Chrome

Definitely gonna add some vocals and all that, but it's nice to have the framework figured out.

Last night was the second time that we've played in Nashville. It's such a tough town for a band playing anything remotely in the rock category. I had some good conversations with the girl in one of the bands that we played with, and she confirmed my theory.
Most places are country oriented (duh) so that only leaves maybe a handful of places that will have rock music. Of those few places...most of them will also on occasion have country music as well.
So if you're a non country band chances are you're going to get stuck on a bill with bands that are kind of in the same genre, if you're lucky. However, that means that you're probably going to get a shit slot at a decent place on a shit night.....or a good spot at a shit place that no one goes to. There is just too much competition out there for peoples attention.
Of the six or seven times now that I've been to that town I'm always glad to come back to K ville.

As for our show last night.....the place was a shit hole...which is fine and kind of prefer. When we rolled in around six everyone there was hammered. One dude was so drunk when he left he walked right in front of an ambulance and almost got killed.
Our drummer had some issues with his kick for the first two songs, but after that we were golden.

There weren't many people there, which is kind of what I was expecting and I'm ok with that. But at the end of the night I talked to the bartender about getting paid, bands were to split the door, and he said that all of the money went into "production"
Now I have no clue what that means and in the 20+ years of shows that I've played that was a first.
If I wasn't so tired and in a bad mood I probably would've given him shit...but I just blew it off.

Here's a few pics. The place is the oldest running bar in TN and it had all kinds of crazy crap all over the place. Including this big piece of the wall that's covered in band stickers. Some of which are pretty old. I think that I only got a pic of a portion of it

Production = sound guy.

I don't have a problem paying the sound guy from he bands' take, but that's probably because it has literally never come up.

Every musician I've met who has actually lived in Austin or Nashville has the same opinion: Fuck Austin and Nashville.

:
i've got no beef with the soundguy getting a cut, but when the soundguy gets the first $100 off the top and three bands split the remaining $18, chances are good i'll never play that venue again because fuck them.

The only way that I could possibly justify the sound guy getting paid first is if he has to do a lot. We're a super easy band to run sound for and at this place the only thing the guy did was mic the kick and set up two vocal mics.

So while I would be a sucker if I were playing rock and roll for money...it's still irritating

We play pretty regularly at one venue, and if it's not a 'big' show the barman runs sound during all ages gig. First time they tried to tell me they took 100 bucks off the top was the last time we played a house gig there. After then we've only gone through a promoter who brings his own soundguy in, who is worth the money in both time spent at the board and quality of his mix.

When did musicians get to be lame? Drummer and Guitarist now quit the band I think I just joined. Must be my BO.

Other "bands" I am corresponding with are slow to reply - vague - and dont like me "knowing all up in dey bidney"

The grandma uke player and vocalist I am duet-ting with is really cool though. I may get to back her 90 year old mother's yodeling performance on the 29th.

So I joined a second cover band about a month ago, we rehearsed once, met up once after that to discuss songs, then every rehearsal we had planned afterwards was cancelled.

Drummer/band leader guy was the person cancelling them, but saying "my phone is literally blowing up with gig requests! Keep learning the songs!"

I told them it was nice meeting them and wished them luck.

Holy shit, we're headlining on the 27th! Thursday night, but that's crazy to me. That will be our 3rd show & there are 3 other pretty damn good/estalished bands. Then again, maybe we're just the suckers that have to wait around all night.

We had our first practice tonight with the guitarist from the surf band playing in MD. Jesus Christ is he good. He also learned five, almost six of our songs and had them almost perfect.

After a few hours of that band he changed amps and guitars and we worked on stuff for the surf band because we were just offered two shows

My hands are like hamburger from playing so much and I couldn't be more happy!

Good to be doing it. Didn't you just get a new guitarist for MD?

Yes we did. He's a good guy and a great player. But with his and his wife's schedule he can't commit a ton of time to the band.
There isn't any animosity and things will be much better for a variety of reasons with the surf guitarist in the band

I'm fortunate enough to play covers with guys I've been friends with since the 70s. We've been in a few incarnations over the years and all have played with other groups but always circle back to playing with each other. We had our 31st anniversary gig at a club in NJ in February where we have a standing gig the last Friday of every month. Taking the stage with these guys is a pleasure every time. We've watched each other grow up, get married, have kids, lose family and friends - but we always have the band as a constant in our lives. It doesn't suck.

An indie filmmaker did a short film on us a couple of years ago.

https://vimeo.com/86340656

We'll keep doing it until one of us no longer can, then we'll fade into well-deserved obscurity. As of now, we're World Famous among our friends and immediate families.

Just got back from our radio interview. It was a lot of fun. The guy who interviewed us plays in a punk band that we've played with before so it wasn't awkward and very natural.
We talked on the air about WWF, Carl Weathers and our upcoming shows and video shoot.
Off the air we cursed like sailors, talked about punk rock and hot chicks.

Welp, one of those nights you play to the other bands and a handful of friends. Maybe 15-20 people there. Last week's show had twice the turnout, but it was free so there's that. We made $13 after paying the sound guy.

The first band had 30ish people. I'm pretty sure they were high school kids and their parents and their parents' friends were there. Hot moms club too so that was neat. The rest of the show? Not so much. If I get pictures/video I'll post it, but we'll see.

I couldn't get people to come to Larimer Lounge for any reason. Of course, that neighborhood was a little different 10 years ago.
