NAD: wife-approved micro rig content

My wife tolerates my (horrible) bass playing. She doesn't even mind having a couple of basses hanging around; she thinks they're pretty. But amps? No way. She hates those big, ugly, black boxes.

Found a solution in the form of a PJB Briefcase "Limited Edition." It's a PJB Briefcase Ultimate with a fancy maple cabinet an incredibly well-done tobacco sunburst finish.

Looks like I'll be letting go of my original PJB Briefcase soon...

Believe it or not, I think the original Briefcase sounds a little better. Not sure if it's the drivers or the power section. But the mids are slightly more natural and the highs are softer/rounder. It's hard to describe tone in words, but somehow the original version has a more "holographic" sound.

The Ultimate is louder and less compressed, but the top end is a little harsher and the mids are flatter. It's more like "great bass amp" and less like "great bass tone floating in air" if you know what I mean. The extra volume and deeper lows are very welcome, though.

Phil Jones says that there is a "break in" time for the speakers.

Bought it used (they've been out of production for a few years now), so it should be about as broken-in as it's going to get

From what I've read, the drivers are different from his original Pirrhanas. There's also a passive radiator type of deal rather than a regular port. The power amp section is different: 150 watts vs. 100 watts. And the cabinet is solid maple instead of (I think) birch ply. There are enough differences that I guess I shouldn't be surprised they don't sound exactly alike.

I'm kind of cork-sniffing anyway. They're very close in tone. The Ultimate is significantly louder, puts out deeper bass, and has a provision to run an extension cab. To my ears, it's not as sweet as the original, which has a certain magic to it. But it's a subtle difference.

Less "sweet" = better for Metal! It's obviously the best portable Metal amp out there!

Love my Briefcase! Always wanted an Ultimate, as I liked the new tech (that he made for the Double Four) that was incorporated into it.

I have had to replace a few of the piranha's in my 4B cabinets, and there are different tonal qualities to be sure. There is a difference in the aesthetics as well.

That's the reason I sold my Bass Cub and Double Four and kept the Briefcase. The Pirahna speakers are my favorite PJB sound.

Me, too. Tried the Bass Cub and was very disappointed. The original Suitcase (with 4B cab) and non-Ultimate Breifcase sound perfect to my ears.
